Rolling Meadows police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 6:12 PM Tuesday March 26, 2019 to a report of a large chemical odor near the bridge over Salt Creek 42.057135, -88.014389 (5501 Carriageway Rolling Meadows, Il). Police and firefighter/paramedics upon arrival discovered what was initially described as a large chemical or gasoline spill near the bridge over the creek. Firefighters reported a strong odor and a sheen on the water surface of Salt Creek.
Initially, firefighters did not discover any chemical or gasoline odor or sheen north of Algonquin Road.
Firefighters are investigating the source of the chemical, and updated the description of the chemical as a “thick hydrocarbon” — possibly an oil like chemical.
Firefighter HazMat crews are investigating and planning containment of the chemical. Initially firefighters are using water booms to contain and absorb the unknown chemical.
The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago was notified of the spill, and firefighters and hazmat crews were investigating how far south the chemical was spilled.
As of 7:00 p.m. the response was not elevated to a HazMat Box Alarm.
