House fire on Meadow Drive Rolling Meadows, 80 year-old woman killed, 45 year-old son hurt, dog killed.
The 80 year-old female, who sustained injuries from the house fire at 3711 Meadow Drive at 4:45 am on Friday, April 13, 2018 in Rolling Meadows, succumbed to burn injuries from the house fire incident three days later on Monday, April 16, 2018. The woman’s identity was released as Karen Brashko.
The Cook County Medical Examiner contacted Rolling Meadows Fire Department administration on Monday April 16, 2018 to notify officials of Karen Brashko’s death which was at 10:03 a.m. Monday. The Illinois State Fire Marshal was contacted with this information and the status of the report will be updated to reflect this fatal outcome, according to Rolling Meadows Fire Department.
The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental in nature and caused from the careless use of smoking material.
Also, a dog was found dead in the house soon after firefighter/paramedics arrived.
Rolling Meadows police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 4:44 AM Friday April 13, 2018 to a report that a dispatcher heard coughing during a 9-1-1 call from the address at 3711 Meadow Drive, Rolling Meadows, Il. The closest paramedic ambulance crew and fire engine crew were dispatched to the 9-1-1 call with coughing. One minute later, a neighbor called 9-1-1 to report the house next door was on fire, and Northwest Central Dispatch System 9-1-1 center upgraded the response to a Code 3 “report of fire”.
The first crew on arrival reported flames showing from the front of the house. Firefighters on interior attack reported a fire in the living room, and updated the response to a Code 4 “working fire response” by 4:51 a.m. The fire was immediately extinguished by firefighters.
When firefighters arrived, two victims were discovered injured in the front yard at the address — a 80 year-old woman, who suffered burn injuries, and her 45 year-old son.
The woman, whose identity was not initially released, was immediately rushed to Northwest Community Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition. She was later transferred to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where there is a burn unit.
Two additional ambulances were requested by 5:03 a.m. — Palatine Ambulance 84 and Arlington Heights Ambulance 3.
A Hoffman Estates ambulance was also dispatched to the scene.
Rolling Meadows police officers were also assisting firefighters at the scene.
